Using an Xtream Codes subscription on a computer

Xtream access comes as three pieces of information: an address, a username, a password. Here is what it gives you beyond a plain list.

Three pieces of information, not a file

Where an M3U playlist is a file, Xtream access is an account on a server. Your provider gives you an address — often shaped like http://example.com:8080 — a username and a password.

The player then queries the server and receives the catalogue live. Nothing to download, nothing to refresh by hand: whatever the provider adds shows up at your next connection.

What Xtream access adds

An M3U playlist carries channels and addresses, nothing more. Xtream access also carries the structure: the provider categories, the separation between live, films and series, seasons and episodes.

It also carries the metadata — poster, plot, year, rating, cast — and the programme guide. That is the difference between a list of names and a library you can browse.

Many providers offer both for the same subscription. When they do, Xtream access is the better one, without exception.

Simultaneous connections

Every subscription allows a set number of streams at the same time — often just one. It is not a number of devices: it is a number of streams open at a given moment.

A playback cut off abruptly can leave a connection open on the server for several minutes. That is what explains a "maximum connections reached" message when nobody else is watching. Waiting a few minutes usually clears it.

What prevents the connection

The port is part of the address and is easy to forget: without it, the connection fails. Also check for a trailing space in the username — copy and paste adds one regularly.

Some providers restrict access to one country. From abroad the connection is then refused even though the credentials are correct.

Finally, a subscription can be suspended without warning. If the same credentials work nowhere, the answer is with the provider, not in the player.

Zonda Player connects to Xtream access and pulls the whole catalogue: live, films, series, guide and metadata. You bring the subscription, it brings the player.
